While at Willamina High School, ceramics and stonework artist Bill Boyson mentored John. Bill Boyson is a regular participant in the Coastal Hills Art Tour, and his work is featured in a number of art galleries. Since his mentoring, John has continued to expand his collection and participate as a local Yamhill County artist. John has earned numerous awards and grants. He received a grant from the Yamhill County Cultural Coalition for $975, which he used to invest in a small kiln. John's work placed first and second at the 2002 4th of July Art Show in Sheridan, and second and third at the 2003 show. He has also won awards at art events in local areas including McMinnville.
